AVFAL's Community Development Through Football Project.
INTRODUCTION.
Limbe is the head quarter of Fako Division in the South West Province. The town, with a population of more then fifty thousand inhabitance's has a long coastline extending from Mabeta fishing port to Isangele just off the boarders with neighbouring Nigeria. The inhabitances are made up of several different nationalities i.e. Cameroonian, Nigerians, and Ghanaian just to name a few. Baptist Missionaries led by the Reverend Alfred Saker founded the town of Victoria now called Limbe in 1858. Land was acquired from the native Bimbia chiefs and the first Baptist church was built here. This territory played host to the first Christian who were freed slaves bought from Fernando Po. Around it they later developed a new settlement that is today known as Limbe (formal Victoria). The name of the city was charged from Victoria to Limbe through a presidential decree in 1983. The name Limbe is taken from the river that runs across the city. Limbe is therefore the entry point of the first missionaries in Cameroon. Youths in the Limbe municipality face a wide range of problems ranging from political, socio-economic, health and educational problems. They face problems such as human rights abuses and child labour. Economically there is high unemployment rate amongst youths in Limbe. The standard of living is low, poor housing conditions and lack of social amenities especially drinking water, health and recreational facilities are amongst the numerous social problems youths in Limbe do face.
BRIEF HISTORY OF AVFAL LIMBE
It is an Organisation of over 250 youths involved in football in the Limbe municipality. The Organisation main activities include;
2. A meaningful connection to adult through the coaching relationship and;
3. A sense of safety and security through regular activities.
AVFAL football and play programmes also serve as tools to teach important values and life skills including self-confidence, teamwork, communication, inclusion, discipline, respect and fair play.AVFAL has the willingness, knowledge and skills but lacks the material and finances to enable it carry out and effectively manage of its activities.An elected executive runs the Organisation. The Organisation carries out football sensitization and educational of youths through training, football tournament.
PURPOSE
AVFAL main objective is the promotion of youths in the involvement of community development and leadership. Young people face a whole range of problems, which can cause distress and even mental ill health with issues like exam pressures, bullying, family problems, bad relationships and drugs causing huge stress. It is estimated that one in five young people experience mental health problems. Living on the streets means people can find themselves vulnerable to a wide range of problems, including drugs and alcohol abuse, gang violence, prostitution and involvement in crime. Many young people have multiple and complex difficulties which require intensive support. AVFAL Limbe gives one-to-one support to young people, offering practical training, help and advices in solving their problems and helping to improve their lives. It’s all about the fun of football-and the good things about it; team spirit, global learning, and living without violence. Our project is all about football as a cultural mediator and a medium for social development.
GLOBAL OBJECTIVES

Upgrade the skills of these youths by providing them with general training support towards the municipality’s program of involving youth’s in community planning, decision making and cross community dialogue and cooperation.

They will be provided with a well structured football training program as well as general training towards the municipality’s program of involving youths in community planning, decision making and cross community dialogue and cooperation.
REASON'S FOR THE PROJECT
Presently, there is lack of a community based Organisation in the municipality to provide sports and recreational facilities for youths in the Limbe Municipality. The exist only one football academy in Limbe know as ACADA SPORTS and Fees are been paid yearly in order to become a student which makes it inaccessible to less privileged youths to be involved in football. Less privileged youths in Limbe are often exploited and abused and feel that they have nowhere to turn to for help. The number of young people using drugs and alcohol has more then doubled over the last few years. Many of these young people initially take drugs to experiment and enhance their everyday lives but end up with having to cope with serious problems. AVFAL community development through football project is aim at providing football equipments and training to less privileged youths in the Limbe Municipality. The Project will also help these youths understand why they used drugs and how they can reduce the damage that they are doing to themselves.
