Thursday 17th July 2008. The United States Ambassador to Cameroon, Her Excellency Mrs. Janet E. GARVEY has donated a soccer kit, shoes and equipment valued at over 350,000 CFA to the African Volunteer Football Academy for the Less Privileged. The soccer gear and equipment donation were handed over to Mrs. Mary Jangha, the chairlady of the academy, on Thursday 17th July at AVFAL's head office in Limbe. The Academy was founded with the aim of providing young players with higher standard of training in soccer. “Training people while still young is of utmost importance, as it is the stage that a footballer develops and will reach his/her maximum potential later in life,” said Mrs. Jangha. The academy aims at teaching young people the basic principles of sport thereby preparing them for future role in our national teams. It also strives to keep them off the streets and prevent them from engaging in criminal activities. Mrs. Jangha further asserted that, “It has long been the battle-cry in Cameroon that enough is not being done to develop and improve the undoubted natural talents in soccer” available in the country.
Presently, there are 300 youngsters and three soccer trainers at the academy. There are efforts under way to expand the academy to ensure that it accesses most previously disadvantaged children currently at an advanced stage. The Academy is also working on a plan to incorporate a female team and is therefore calling on all Cameroonians, home and abroad and from all works of life to support in order for them to realise the dream of constructing the first charitable football Academy in Cameroon.
